We love supporting indie brands and women with a jewelry dream and Lehrkah is both. This fine jewelry company sprang up in Brooklyn, New York with hip designs and affordable prices (everything is under $400). We caught up with them to get the scoop on their story and where they are headed.
First tell us where the name "Lehrkah” came from?
Lehr is my middle name and my mother’s birth name. I’ve always thought it was pretty, but also somewhat mysterious as my late grandfather was orphaned at a young age and we don’t know much about the background. When I was experimenting with different variations, I found that Lehrka is the name of a town in India. Currently the collection is being manufactured in this excellent, family-owned facility in Mumbai - so I appreciated the correlation.
You started your own jewelry company! That is amazing, what is the hardest part of this journey?
Time! I have a full time job - fortunately it’s in the same industry so there is a little bit of overlap. However, when you’re doing something you care about it rarely feels like work. Doing work from bed with a glass of wine also helps. I really wish I was one of those people that fully functioned on 4-5 hours of sleep, that would be ideal.
We are always dying to know about people’s personal collections, can you share with us something special to you?
Oh this is tough. I think it would have to be a pair of lucite clip on earrings I fell in love with at a consignment store when I was about 7 or 8. I begged my mother for them and I can’t remember how much they cost but I know it wasn’t an easy purchase as we didn’t have much money at the time. I wore them everywhere. Unfortunately, at some point I lost one of them, as I do with all my earrings, but I still keep one in my jewelry box today.
What is your favorite design you sell?
My favorite design is the Kate Asymmetrical Baguette Diamond Ring - named after and inspired by my friendship and working relationship with my best friend Kaitlin. We both love baguette cut stones and this piece represents the two of us and also strikes a balance between our different personal styles.
What is your most popular design?
Definitely our Callie Diamond Ear Climbers - they’re modern and fun and look great on everyone.
What is next for your company?
Right now I’m working on the next collection which will be available in February. I’m very excited about the new set of designs as I feel I can be more adventurous this time and I can put more of my personality into them.
