How They Met
It all started in 2009. I was fresh out of university as a young Architect. With my degree in hand and eagerness to make my mark in the world I set off right away staring my own company with the vision of becoming the next Enzo Piano. With boring clients to and boring jobs lined up I was getting restless to catch a break. One normal day I was sitting in our office with my dad, catching up on office work when my phone rings. I look at the phone and say out loud the name displayed on my phone “Max”. My dad piped up and said “oh I gave your reference to a friend of mine who’s little brother was looking for an architect .... be nice”. Well thanks for the heads up dad! So in the most professional voice I could conjure up last minute I answered “Helloooo” (just the slightest of British accent thrown in there). Well this handsome voice responds hello and from there our conversation sparks.
After meeting I was obviously hired by this young, charming and successful business man to design his custom homes. Our working relationship lasted about 2 years in which we became good friends. Meeting after meeting we grew very fond of each other but we were both in separate relationships of our own so we were held back by the eager what if? After two years of friendship and working closely together we realized just how we could not live one without each other. So over a glass of wine and architectural magazines we shared our first kiss and since have never spent a single day without one another.
And they fell in love…
Our romantic relationship started fast and strong. We spent most of our time together traveling all over the Caribbean being irresponsible and in love, taking naps in each other arms in every comfortable spot we could find, and just laughing uncontrollably at every happy moment. As you could imagine after a while we were both flat broke from living in the moment, which by the way was the best choice we ever made. With only ten thousand dollars left in both of our bank accounts combined, we obviously decided to do the responsible thing... spend every last penny on a 2 month adventure in Thailand!
This was the second most best decision we ever made. With one vespa and two hearts crazy in love we drove all over Thailand and visited every exotic beach we could. It was our adventure of being nothing but in love beach bums with burnt cheeks and sand in our hair. We didn’t care about a thing in the world. All the pressures of living in today’s rat race society just disappeared and life became clear. Together we could achieve all our dreams, we could rule the world and be successful at anything we wanted, because we just accomplished the hardest thing in life, finding each other. Nobody or nothing in the world could ever take that away! So suddenly the world was no longer complicated and no dream was too big or out of reach. Together we came up with a business plan to design and build high end luxury homes on our own. We came back to Toronto cash broke but rich in our souls. We set in motion and achieved every milestone in our plan. What people take tens of years to achieve we did in less than a year. We were back on track, fierce and successful, happy standing by each other’s side and achieving our dreams.
The Proposal Story
For my birthday, July 2013, as my present he booked a wonderful trip to the Bahamas. Obviously because we love beaches and ocean. I had an inkling that maybe this could be it, this could be when he proposes! Off we go and settle in right away as beach bums, but this time in a five star ocean view penthouse luxury suite (he never does anything half way, always the best of the best). The day of my birthday arrives and he has a romantic private dinner planned on the beach. In my head this was it, it had to be! Before we leave the room he sits me down of the bed and gives me my birthday present. He handed me a small white box. I thought he would get down on one knee not just hand me a box. Kind of disappointed I opened the box and my heart dropped to see a diamond necklace shining at me instead of a ring. Normally anybody would be ecstatic about the gift and I was, but tried desperately to hide my delusion. No ring and no proposal, oh well, not yet I thought to myself. We enjoyed our romantic dinner and our wonderful stay in paradise. Little did I know that this was all just a ploy to make sure I would be as surprised as ever.
A couple of days before our departure we took a helicopter ride to see the islands of the Bahamas from up high. It was kind of our thing to take helicopter rides where we could in the Caribbean, our first ride being in the mountains of Jamaica. The pilot was amazing and was an excellent tour guide enriching us with some history behind certain spots of the island. Far from the resorts we reach a cluster of small deserted islands. The pilot starts telling a story about an island called green key island, which is said to posses magical powers. This island was almost impossible to visit as there was no beach to land on. Only at certain moments would the tide allow it. We approach the island and he points out enthusiastically that the low tide would allow us to land and that we would be able to spend some time collecting some exotic shells (also something I love).
In short, the magical powers this island possesses are said to enslave whomever was able visit with endless love. So the pilot landed the helicopter and let us off to collect some shells and have a love spell cast on us. The beach was too small for the helicopter to stay, so he took off leaving us there to enjoy our seclusion from the world. It was so beautiful and mystical. A small deserted island all ours! It was like being brought back to our Thailand days of nothing but us and the sand in our hair. I looked down at the shore in search of my shells when I heard him call my name with his handsome voice. I turned around to see him down on one knee and reaching in his pocket. He said “I loved you and wanted to marry you since the day I met you, you are the girl of my dreams will you marry me?” I was so taken by everything, the meticulous planning of our fairytale engagement, the love of my life kneeling in front of me declaring his love for me, and the Four Carat Emerald Cut diamond being slipped onto my finger!!! I said yes! We rode back to our hotel in a stretch limo with few words said but with our eyes always locked in a gaze.
