Tell us about the @the_diamonds_girl?
Less than two years ago, I decided to start an Instagram page, to share the pieces that most appeal to me. I thought my friends and family would follow me, but never in my wildest dream could I have imagined that @The_Diamonds_Girl Instagram page would be so popular. I put my heart and soul into the account, spending hours, days and weeks visiting jewelers and jewelry events, taking pictures, and engaging with my followers. Many people tell me that my personality really comes through in my Instagram account, and that they feel that they know me personally. I hope that is the case, as I firmly believe that every piece of jewelry has life breathed into it by the woman wearing it. The diamonds enhance our beauty, and in return, we make them sparkle! I have stayed true to my vision and my personal taste and I think that accounts for @The_Diamonds_Girl’s popularity. There is not a single piece posted that I would not personally love to own. Many jewelers have taken pieces out their cases and placed them in front on me to photograph, and I have quietly shaken my head. My taste is classic - the less fuss, the better. At the same time, I appreciate the design and craftsmanship that goes into creating more sophisticated, elaborate pieces, and I have learned to love and appreciate those too!
Tell us why do you love diamonds?
I love everything that diamonds represent – nature and how it transforms itself, from coal to a rough diamond, and how man and technology can then take that to the next level, creating something so magnificent! They represent purity, permanence, and love.
How has instagram changed the jewelry world?
Instagram has bought high end, luxury jewelry into everybody’s life! While it may never be attainable for all, through social media platforms such as Instagram, we can all admire and enjoy premium pieces that we ordinarily would not have access to. The large jewelry houses are extremely aware of the importance of social media as a marketing platform. Instagram builds their brand recognition, and helps them maximize the value of their celebrity jewelry placements. I mean who did not drool over the recent pictures of Jennifer Lopez on the red carpet dripping in Harry Winston?
What trends do you see happening in jewelry right now?
There are many inspiring trends right now. One of my favorites is the snake motif, While we instinctively think of Bulgari and their incredible serpenti collection, it is to be found in the work of Cartier, Boucheron, and many others. Despite the sometimes negative association of snakes, snake jewelry is growing in popularity, and cropping up everywhere!
Another hot rend right now is colored diamonds. They are so rare, so exquisite, and so coveted! The leading auction houses, Sothebys and Christies, have seen record prices for pinks and blues. Yellow remain in demand, and I think they always will. But a perfect pink or blue….that’s exceptional!
We always have to ask, what is your favorite piece of jewelry you own?
That’s an easy one, it would have to be my engagement ring! My husband chose a D Flawless Round Diamond, set in a classical Tiffany setting, complimented by an eternity wedding band. Oftentimes I think about trading up for a larger stone, but the symbolism of the ring, and the occasion upon which I received it, always stops me! I wish I had a romantic story to tell you about the proposal, but the truth is that he asked me to marry him in a nightclub, and the music was so loud that I actually wasn't sure I heard him correctly, until I heard the DJ announce it and congratulate us!
What is your favorite cut of diamonds and why?
The romantic in me has always favored a heart cut diamond. I am very fussy about the cut, the proportions have to be exactly right, not too plump, not too skinny, not too short, and not too elongated! And of course, it has to be perfectly symmetrical, which makes it even more challenging.
