If you follow Gem Hunt on instagram (which you should), you know we like big diamonds and we cannot lie. And you know there is one premier instagram account for flawless and we mean flawless big rocks and that is @vechler. If your are like us and have an insatiable curiosity about diamonds, you have been probably wondering who is Vechler? How does he have a job where he gets to work with the most amazing diamonds in the world? Well we found out. His name is Ori and he is not only a part of the prodigious A.A. Rachminov family, but he is full of knowledge about the Asian diamond market (which fascinates us). He lives and works out of A.A. Rachminov's office in Shanghai but travels the world providing the best diamonds and customer service. This is a Gem Hunt interview you won't want to miss.
What is your background, how did you end up working for the most prestigious diamond company?
I was born and raised in Israel. I moved to Shanghai four years ago and joined A.A Rachminov Diamonds. A.A Rachminov Diamonds are my family relatives. From a very young age it was clear to me and that when I finished serving in the army that I would join the family business. So it happened, at the age of 21, after three years serving at the army I went to study gemology and afterwards joined A.A Rachminov Diamonds family. I worked few months in our Tel Aviv office and after a while moved to our Shanghai office.
What are the trends the Asian market?
The asian market is growing rapidly, but it is still in the early stages of diamond education. For many years, jade and gold were the popular luxury items, but recently diamonds have become more coveted. As you may know in China there are many "new rich" people that got extremely wealthy in a very short period of time. Because of this the market potential here is huge, but will still take time till it reaches it full potential. The most popular diamonds here are 1 carat and lower round cut diamonds, G\H\I VS\SI goods. That said, more and more people are starting to be interested in higher colors, fancy shapes, and fancy colors. In fancy colors the popular shapes are the square ones like Cushion cuts and Radiant cuts. The popular fancy cuts are Cushion, Ovals, and lately we have lot of requests for Emerald cut.
A.A. Rachminov deals in a lot of big diamonds (over 6 carats) anything people need to know when they are buying a diamond that big?
A.A Rachminov Diamonds has grown to become one of the most prestigious diamond exporters in the world, especially in larger size diamonds. I would suggest to people when they are buying a big diamond, they first look for a certified stone, in particular by the GIA and buy from a trusted source. Please pay attention to details like the cut, shape, color, and clarity, and not just to the price tag. There are many larger sizes diamonds, but not many are perfectly cut with good clarity. Don't compromise on quality, even if it costs a bit more it's worth it.
What is your favorite cut of diamond?
I would have to say Emerald cut, there is something so simple and elegant about this shape, that in my eyes, nothing can beat that.
Any pro-tips on how to care for your diamonds?
Well, safety first. Dealing with such high value items requires a lot of attention and safety. Always use it with the right tools, and be extra careful with flawless stones. Jeweler’s clean only once and awhile and then try to keep the diamonds clean for as long as possible.
