You changed career tracks from CPA to jewelry store owner, how were you able to make that transition?
My plan was always to be self-employed. After working crazy hours for 4+ years, I realized accounting was not what I wanted to do forever. As a high school student I thought I would one day have my own accounting firm. However, I always loved jewelry, especially rings. While growing up, I remember my mom taking my to Claire’s and letting me buy the ring sets that came with 10-15 rings and wearing rings on each finger when going out to even something so simple such as the movies. So when my father in law suggested I come into the family business and all the opportunities it had to offer I jumped on the idea.
Going from such a structured and disciplined life of accounting to such a relaxed field of jewelry was definitely the hardest. I didn’t have someone to review my work or someone to report to. I didn’t have a structure and proper step by step instructions on how to correctly do something. I had to create a structure and establish my own culture at work. A lot of research and time went into and continues to go into growing the brand alongside offering high-end luxury quality in all of my pieces and to all of my clients.
How were able to make that transition?
My husband’s family has been in the jewelry industry for over 35 years. My father in law owned an Indian jewelry store and established himself in the industry early on. In 2011, while I was planning my wedding my father in law asked if I wanted to join the business. Having an accounting degree and working at a big four accounting firm for over four years I had great work ethic and was very detail oriented. I was interested in business so I attended GIA and got my degree. Friends and family then would ask me to make them diamond jewelry from time to time since we got great deals on diamonds and after designing a few engagement rings I realized how much I loved creating them. I also get to work with couples so in love and excited to make such a meaningful purchase which always keeps me driven and loving what I do.
You have a very popular Instagram account, how this affected your business?
Instagram has been great for my business. It’s mainly due to my subject matter - stunning diamond jewelry that women in all stages of their life can admire and appreciate. Many of my clients hear about me from Instagram and reach out to me for more information and to set up an appointment straight from it. It’s definitely a great tool.
What cut and setting is most popular with your clients?
I would have to say Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds and Cushion Modified Cut Diamonds would be the most popular diamond cuts. Setting styles vary, many clients prefer the halo or a solitaire setting with diamonds along the band and hidden diamonds (sometimes along the bar or on the bridge).
What is the advantage of working with a family business like yourself?
They should choose me because I can offer them everything an online retailer can. Competitive or lower pricing on the diamond as we sell our diamonds at wholesale prices… A 100% custom crafted engagement ring at a very comparable price to their stocked settings but using higher quality side stones and spending the extra time to have stones set under a microscope and checked along each step of the process. I really do offer a truly personalized jewelry experience and this goes a long way. My clients are usually a more sophisticated client that appreciates quality and does their research when making a luxury high-end purchase. They know what they want and are looking for the right expert to see their vision and make it as best as they can. I listen, take notes, and deliver to my client's expectations.
Why do you love diamonds?
I love diamonds and have ever since I was a little girl. The sparkle and beauty that each and every diamond has is unique from the rest. It’s an amazing thing. I look at diamonds all day and still learn something new each day while analyzing them. They also are so subtle but make such a statement - I just love that!
