You just got engaged! Congrats! Our two cents on the wedding planning process get that shit done as fast as possible. Wedding planning takes up a lot of brain and power and it is hard to operate in that mode for a year plus. But we what we are really here to talk to you about is that new sparkler on your finger! We are laying down the law today on how to take care of that ring. We know it's all champagne bubbles and excitement right now, but we feel a duty to educate on proper diamond care because it is something we feel passionately about!
Rule 1 - We know you are now in full bridal bootcamp mode #sweatingforwedding and it's fun to flaunt that ring but the truth is that piece of fine jewelry is really not made to survive Soul Cycle or Barry's Bootcamp so leave the ring at home. Same goes for showering, housework, and anything that bangs your ring around!
Rule 2 - Clean that ring regularly! We have a full post on engagement ring cleaning but the cliff notes is once a week warm water, little dish soap and with an old toothbrush go to town. Soak first then scrub softly. This is super important because dirt and grime can erode the the construction of your ring over time.
Rule 3 - Purchase insurance (right away). We can tell many a tale of a lost engagement ring, but we don't want to scare you with horror stories. So go get jewelry insurance and make sure you have that ring protected in case of emergency.
Rule 4 - Schedule a yearly check up. Yes like your health your ring should go see your jeweler once a year. Get it professionally cleaned and checked that everything is still in it's right place and make sure there is no damage. If you have a platinum ring expect to get it polished and if you have a white gold ring expect to get it rhodium plated to bring back the that just engaged sparkle and shine.
