If you have you have ever asked the question - what does a jeweler do when they get engaged and how do they find the perfect ring? Well then, you should read this engagement ring expose with Andria the founder and owner of vintage jewelry store Victor Barbone. We had the same question, when we embarked on interviewing her for this Gem Hunt feature - how does a jeweler find the perfect ring? Well, we got the inside look on her perfect sparkler and mixing it up wedding ring situation (which we are always pro - matchy matchy it out people). Read below to find all the lovely details and romance.
How did he propose?
It was no surprise that he was going to propose as we had been together for seven years! From the beginning I had a few requests for the proposal:
- I wanted my nails manicured,
- I wanted to look pretty (no post-gym or first thing in the morning for me), and
- I wanted it well documented!
Darren made sure to do all of that! He scheduled me a manicure appointment in the morning, told me to get glammed up for the night, and had a secret photographer there to take photos of everything! He proposed in a “vintage” building called the Cigar Factory that was undergoing renovations and had been such an allure to us for 6 years! It isn’t special to anyone else but it was special to us and more perfect for our engagement than a beautiful beach or vacation proposal! That’s the most important thing in a proposal, I think. Tailoring it to what is special to you as a couple. Afterwards there was a limo, champagne, steak dinner, and Paleo cookies for dessert! It was perfect!
How involved were you in picking out the ring?
When Darren looked at my pinterest board and saw pear cuts, emerald cuts, ballerina rings, raw diamonds, baguettes, sapphires, and more, he knew he was in trouble! I don’t think that he even attempted to find a ring on his own! One day he told me that he was overwhelmed and maybe we should do it together!
After much searching, we ended up at a Trunk Show and came out with a gorgeous solitaire that found a balance between his simple style and my desire for something unique!
I loved that we picked out the ring together because we got rid of the uncertainty! We were both positive that we loved the ring! He didn’t have to worry about letting me down and I didn’t have to worry about hurting his feelings that it wasn’t what I had been dreaming about! I highly encourage women to play a role in selecting the ring or to at least offer some guidance!
What are the specs on your ring?
My ring is set with a 2.27 ct OEC that is light brown, SI1 clarity. It is set in an 18kt solitaire setting that is adorned with small accent diamonds throughout.
What is your favorite thing about your ring?
My favorite thing about my ring is the unique color! Since it is light brown, it has a pinkish tinge to it that sparkles all different colors depending on the lighting! It has perfect chunky facets and a perfect, visible cutlet! I am also partial to yellow gold so I am ecstatic that I found it!
What is your favorite way to take care of your ring?
I follow all the rules! I take it off when I shower, do the dishes, sleep, and go to the gym. I store it in my ring box whenever I am not wearing it! I also clean it at least once a week! I use a toothbrush, warm water, and Method dish soap when I am at home! It is important to clean your diamonds because even one fingerprint on it can dull the sparkle! I peek at everyone’s rings and 99% of them are in severe need of a scrub!
Tell us about your wedding band and how you chose it?
I am a huge fan of mix and match style so I mixed metals (platinum, yellow gold), styles (Edwardian, Art Deco), and cuts (brilliant, step). I am baguette obsessed and since my engagement ring did not have any on it, I knew I needed baguettes in my band! I found a thin platinum band with horizontal baguettes. The thinness of the band allowed me to add a 200-year-old yellow gold band to my “stack” to balance out the colors. I am very pleased with the outcome! I may add some rose cuts down the line though…
