They also help us understand why colored diamonds are the most expensive diamonds on earth. This is a must read if you want to learn more about those pinks, blues, yellows, and greens we all covet.
What is a fancy colored diamond?
The presence of color in a fancy color diamond is an entirely natural process while are subjected to high pressures and high temperature. Under the earth’s crust diamonds lose their atomic integrity: their orderly structure is twisted and they come to absorb other types of atoms. As a result, they do not reflect all the light they receive — some of the wavelengths are absorbed and the diamond takes on some color.
How do you make sure you are manufacturing a high-quality fancy colored diamonds?
The diamond’s color, a combination of hue and intensity, is the key factor in determining its value. Given our vast industry experience, we are best equipped to choose the correct materials to polish, in order to get the most coveted colors. These stones are graded in the strictest laboratories with the highest standards, giving us the rarest and most desired product on the market.
Some colors are more rare and hence expensive than others — can you walk us through that and why?
In the white diamond market, the absence of color is the most important parameter and one of four key factors in determining a diamond’s value. The fancy color category is a small niche market in which the opposite is true, and this market holds the highest value.
The grading of a fancy color diamond is based upon it’s saturation, otherwise known as intensity. Colors such as pink, blue and green are some of the rarest colors to appear in nature; the intensity of these colors is what determines their value. The other factor such as a secondary color inlay within the stone can also dramatically change the color.
Are they are colors that are increasing in popularity? Like up and coming colors?
Green diamonds are almost as rare as blues and pinks, but they do not receive an equal media exposure. At this year a rare 5.03 carat fancy vivid green diamond was auctioned. It special not only because of its size, which makes it the largest ever Fancy Vivid Green diamond ever sold at auction, but also because of its VS2 clarity. I think the press this beautiful green diamond received will make green diamonds much more popular.
