Have you heard of Reverie? Well if you are not familiar with it already, it is a very interesting concept we would definitely recommend you check out. Reverie is the first engagement ring registry. Reverie helps you find the perfect engagement ring for you and share it with your significant other or friends. It takes the guesswork out of finding the right ring to last a lifetime and makes the process more seamless. You can also look up someone's registry on Reverie and get familiar with the sort of ring they are coveting. Bonus points - it's completely free.
We were excited to get the chance to interview Harrison one part of the dynamic duo behind Reverie to learn more about the company and the inspiration. Here at Gem Hunt, we always like entrepreneurs and people changing the fine jewelry space so this was a particularly interesting interview for us that we hope you enjoy.
What inspired you to start Reverie?
I have always loved the art and emotion of the engagement and wedding industry. A few years ago, ago I made a life-altering decision. I realized it was time and I decided to ask my then girlfriend to marry me. Next came the fun part–engagement ring shopping. In order to keep things a surprise, I went by myself and started the process. The second I set foot in the store, I was overwhelmed. There were so many choices! Was she a traditional round or perhaps a cushion? Did she even want a diamond? I couldn’t help but think to myself, “I hope I get this right!”.
Then I saw the price tag and knew, I better get this right. When I later talked to my then girlfriend (now wife) about the process, I learned she faced a similar dilemma. For her it was more about, “How do I tell Harrison I’m ready to take the next steps and the type of ring I want without having that awkward direct conversation?!” Right then we knew we had something.
That’s why we created Reverie, the first engagement ring registry. It takes the guesswork out of engagement ring shopping and keeps the romance and surprise.
Why are you passionate about it?
We are deeply passionate about bringing more romance to our world and encouraging surprise marriage proposals. For many couples, contemplating marriage and shopping for an engagement ring can be a daunting process. Exorbitant price tags and new terminology contribute to a challenging experience.
On top of that, there is a fine line between shopping with a partner and keeping the process a secret and surprise. We are giving couples a new way to approach engagement ring shopping. Taking the next steps towards marriage is an exhilarating stage, but there is so much pressure involved in engagement ring shopping. We aim to alleviate this pressure so that couples can focus on what’s important — each other.
What has been the most fun part of working on Reverie?
A few weeks ago, we started receiving emails from couples that had used our beta site and found success. After the first email we received, we closed up shop and the whole team went to happy hour. It happened to be a little early for happy hour, but we had to celebrate! Anytime we receive emails from success couples we’re elated. Impacting individuals lives for the better is definitely the best part of our jobs.
What has been the hardest part of starting this company?
Hah, where do I begin?! Starting a company is a journey riddled with ups and downs. For every win, there are at least ten losses. Facing these setbacks and consciously choosing to continue is a lesson I’m still learning to master. It’s one of the hardest parts for any company–resilience. Here’s my outlook. I have a dream, I’m going for that dream, and I’m not stopping. Taking Reverie from an idea to a tangible product has been one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences.
We have made note a few jewelry/diamond startup’s that have started this year — why do you think this space is growing in the startup community?
Who doesn’t love jewelry?! Everyone needs a little sparkle in their life. A few years ago the startup world was heavily focused on wedding technology. It’s refreshing to see that attention re-directed to the jewelry and engagement ring world. It’s such a fascinating space. It was only a matter of time before the jewelry startup community gained more recognition.
You have really grown your social media well in a short period of time — what is your secret sauce there?
We care deeply about our audience and connecting with them. We work with some of the best photographers and vendors in order to only feature top quality content. Social media was invented as a platform for friends to connect. That’s how we aim to treat it. Even though we don’t know our audience personally, we share similar taste and perspectives. Hey, we probably would be friends with them if we met in real life! We care about our connections.
What is your long-term goal for the company?
We’d love to keep on building out the product to serve our audience. We have some lofty long-term goals and vision for Reverie. But for now we’re focused on the short-term. (It’s crazy enough for us that we’re living out our dream and Reverie is a real product that is helping couples. Pinch us.) If we can continue to help simplify the engagement ring shopping process for couples, we’re on cloud nine.
What place do you think engagement rings will continue to have in our society?
Engagement rings date back to Egyptian folklore. Legend has it that a young prince was madly in love with a princess. The princess’ father refused to approve of the marriage due to their age. So the prince had his royal jewelers search all the lands for the most precious stone and craft the most coveted ring to give to the princess. A promise that one day he would wed her. There is something romantic about engagement rings that will never die. At Reverie, we don’t care how simple or fancy the ring is, it’s simply the meaning behind it.
