We love the Canadian-based fine jewelry brand Foe and Dear. The line is filled with special, delicate and handmade pieces that feel both whimsical and modern at the same time. The founder Katherine has a special eye for mixing gemstones and metals across a range of items that feels fresh and beautiful. Our current favorites in her line up are the Herkimer Diamond Studs and Gold Druzy Studs.
We were lucky enough to bring you a little behind the scenes interview with the lovely founder Katherine and few snapshots of her studio life.
Tell us a little about your journey and how to got to where you are today?
Probably the best thing about this journey is that it wasn’t planned. Jewelry has always been a hobby of mine, ever since I was little. I had learned design techniques as I studied fashion design at Ryerson University but had never intended to make jewelry. A few years after graduating, I had moved from Toronto to New York and interned with an amazingly inspirational jewelry designer/shop owner. I working in the Brooklyn studio one day and the path sort of unfurled in front of me from there. Now, I’ve moved back to the west coast, have a beautiful, light-filled studio in Gastown and everything is so, so great!
Why do you love fine jewelry?
I love being able to design and make a piece that will last a lifetime.
Do you have a current favorite piece in your line?
The Tiny Sparkler Point Ring is my favorite! I love the way it lights up people's eyes when they put it on. It’s also been a client favorite to customize for special occasions. We have been able to make this style as engagement rings, anniversary rings, birthday rings.. etc!
Any advice for aspiring jewelry entrepreneurs?
Be passionate and stick with it. I think that if you are passionate and believe in what you’re doing, others will too. It’s really tough to start your own business, but it’s so worth it.
Where did the inspiration for your name come from?
The brand’s name was inspired by our time living in New York.
You work with lots of different gemstones — do you have a favorite?
So many gemstones… So much love for all of them. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be October’s birthstone, opal. It’s a truly remarkable gem that holds so much magic and uniqueness in each stone.
You work a lot in yellow gold — why do you love it?
I’ve always been drawn to yellow gold. It has a more romantic feel and the warm color compliments all skin types.
