The world of engagement rings is intense - split prongs? split shank? diamond pave details? rose gold or white gold? Well, there is one engagement ring guru who masters it all - Kamni of Designs by Kamni. She is known for creating on-trend rings with delicate prongs, tiny bands, and is the master of those hidden diamond details we all like so much. I actually had the privilege to interview her about her background and how she got into the business in 2015. If you would like to read that interview you can find it here.
Fast-forward 9 months later, I got in touch to get an update for you on the bulk of her business - custom made engagement rings. If you are considering having a ring made from scratch this is a must read interview.
Why do you love creating custom engagement rings?
The element of customization is something that is appreciated and requested in all areas where affordable and available. For my clients to know that their piece is made with their vision in mind and no compromises needing to be made to it really describes exactly what I strive for.
No one needs to settle when working with me. We have a product available at any price point to meet all wants and needs. We don’t work off of molds, rather, each piece is custom made with the center diamond’s exact measurements in mind, the finger size and the design style from how wide the shank should be to how large the diamonds around the basket should be to compliment the center stone.
I love creating custom rings because each one is just that, unique, with its own personality and story behind it.
How does someone know if creating a custom ring is for them?
Creating a custom ring can be for anyone. Pricing doesn’t vary significantly from a ready-made setting, however, little details do not get missed. Many times, while someone is trying on a ring (or anything for that matter) they say “it’s so nice, I wish it was a little wider….” , “it would be perfect if the diamond just sat a little lower in the setting….” , “this is my dream ring minus the diamonds on the prongs” well with me, they can say that and we can modify it and share a rendering giving them a 360 degree view of their modified design before they commit to it.
What should people come prepared with before they start the process?
Shop around. Understand the market and how similar products are available at larger chain jewelry stores, online retailers, and through local private jewelers. Although the product is similar it’s important to understand what goes into making a piece and the experience matters as well.
Take time to at least read up on the 4 c’s of diamonds (cut, color, clarity, and carat) and get a feel for what style engagement ring you or your fiance would like — solitaire, halo, 3-stone, etc.
What is the first step in creating a custom ring with you?
The first step is reaching out to set up an appointment via email, phone, or through our Get Started form on our website and giving me an idea as to what you are in need for. I like to prepare for all my client’s and understand their wants and needs before they come in so that we can cater to them and offer specific guidance, advice and options. We then set up an initial consultation where couples or just the person proposing will come in and I’ll educate them on diamonds, show them some loose stones, discuss different setting styles and determine a timeline and budget for their engagement ring.
What sets your custom rings apart?
All of our custom made rings are made from scratch — no molds to work off of. Even if we are re-making a popular setting, such as our Designs By Kamni Classic Solitaire Setting, the actual CAD file gets modified for the center diamond’s exact details, the client’s finger size, and any other modifications they may request. All diamonds are set under a microscope and only F+ color and VS+ quality diamonds are used for the setting.
What’s the timeline for getting the finished product?
The timeline for getting the finished product is usually 3–4 weeks, however, we have been able to complete custom pieces within 1–2 weeks if we have to!
Any trends or things you are known for?
Although I am known for custom engagement rings and wedding bands of all sorts, most of my client’s appreciate the design element I offer to classic solitaire settings, mainly the diamond accents around the basket/bar of the center stone which can only be seen from the side profile. My most popular engagement ring setting, inspired off of my personal engagement ring, is the Designs By Kamni Classic Solitaire Setting with diamonds around the basket and along the bridge.
Another design aspect I am well known for is the thin delicate prongs holding the center stone and how perfectly they hold the center stone using talon prongs (baby claw prongs). We spend a lot of time perfecting the prongs on each engagement ring so that it does not overpower the center stone, but securely holds it in place while still being thin to match the aesthetic of the overall piece.
