ATTIC is a brand I wish I could embody because it just has the coolest minimalistic vibe that is oh-so-effortless and chic. It is helmed by a design duo of Melissa and Susan out of Canada, that pretty much rock everything they do. When I visit their website I want to load up on gold staple pieces and splurge on gray rose cut diamond earrings. It's the kind of brand you could own a lot of because everything goes with everything and it's made it last. I got to know this duo, which have a been a dream to work with in my latest pop-up with Dream Diam! Their ring is stunning (pictured above) and it's been fun to working on this interview to get to know the women who make ATTIC tick.
Our favorite stone to work with is…
These days we are really into working with rose cut diamonds — especially the gray ones with beautiful natural inclusions in them that celebrate nature in all her glory! The cut of these diamonds evokes an ancient and modern feeling at once, that seems to transcend time.
Tell me more about being a design duo and how that works?
Whether we are designing a collection piece or a piece of custom jewellery with a client, we work most within the ethos of simplicity, always thinking about how we can design a simple, strong, and beautiful piece that will still hold its style for years to come.
We make jewellery that is comfortable and easy to wear — so that you can effortlessly toss on your gold and be out the door feeling put together and ready for the world.
In terms of working as a duo, it’s all about taking a concept and bouncing it off of each other, back and forth until the piece is complete. It’s like a tennis match, except we are on the same team!
Susan is the lead designer at ATTIC, meaning that she brings forward most of the new design concepts. Because we are both goldsmiths, however; we work collaboratively to solve design problems, and ultimately determine how to best make a piece of jewellery. Our jeweller’s benches face each other, so the dialogue is ongoing, sometimes right up until we are putting the finishing touches on a piece.
Where did your name come from?
The name ATTIC comes from a feeling. We love the nostalgia that the word evokes. From a design perspective, ATTIC feels balanced, and solid — something that we are always trying to achieve with our jewellery and with the brand.
You have a very minimal aesthetic tell me more about why your work is grounded in that?
Yes, we do have a very minimalist aesthetic. When we launched ATTIC, we set out to design jewellery that is simple, well made, and fresh yet classic. Striking this balance takes time, but it’s the kind of challenge that we love going after.
Because we work with precious resources, we try to approach our jewellery making with consciousness and deliberation, with the ultimate goal being to create pieces with a very long life. In our minds, if a piece of jewellery has a minimal aesthetic, then there is a good chance that it will still be wearable in 100 years. If not, it will at least be recyclable!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
We find inspiration from working with our clients, and of course, from working with beautiful raw materials, like gold and gemstones.
There is an undeniable magic that happens when a someone slips into their new gold jewellery. It’s like all the lights get turned on at once. This is the kind of connection that we want to help create. This is what inspires us.
Our signature piece of jewelry is...
Susan is never seen without her pinky signet ring that is engraved with the letter “A”, for her first born ATTIC. It has become part of her identity, and is a nod to the ancient art of hand-engraving, while somehow still feeling fresh.
My signature piece would have to be the Poe Earrings, which I rarely leave the house without. I love their geometry and how they effortlessly elevate any look (Melissa).
