Ali Munn makes cool girl jewels and we have to mention she also has cool girl perfectly straight bangs (that we are semi-envious because when we went through a bang phase ours never looked like her, but we digress). We love her whimsical, talismanic gold jewels and are proud to announce she is a jeweler in our next pop-up - Diamond Campaign! She is a Candian, based out of vancuver, where she lives and works and brings her creations to life.
How did your brand start?
When I lived in Calgary I got a job at a little bead store downtown. After working there for a while the owner suggested I enroll in some silversmithing night classes at the local art college to learn some new skills that might benefit the shop. After taking a few classes I was hooked, and decided to move out to Vancouver to attend a full-time jewelry diploma program! While in my second year of the program I made my first mini collection and began selling online. Upon graduation, I started to focus on creating custom pieces and growing my business.
What’s your best advice for women shopping for jewelry?
One good tip is that if you are investing in a ring, it is a good idea to get your ring size measured a couple of different times to find what will be the best fit! There are so many variables that can cause your finger to swell or shrink on any given day, so having it double checked is a good idea! Also to make sure that when you are getting sized, to take into account the width of the ring you are wanting to purchase. A ring with a wide band will fit much differently than a skinny one.
What excites you about this project with Gem Breakfast?
One of the things that excites me most is getting to know the other designers! I love the people that this industry attracts, and getting to see what they will come up with is exciting.
What’s your favorite color diamond?
It depends on the cut! For rose cuts, I love a salt and pepper with lots of contrast in the inclusions. For a brilliant cut diamond, I would go for a champagne color.
When I'm not designing jewelry I am…
Probably trying to get out of the city! The best thing about Vancouver is the ability to get to lots of amazing places within a couple of hours drive time. Or you can always hop a ferry and check out one of the islands!
Ali will be commissioning a one of kind ring for Gem Breakfast. Make sure you follow along to see what she makes!
